On December 9th, the AQI of Mumbai surpassed 300 – a threshold that qualifies the air as “very poor” according to India’s measuring standards – on four consecutive days from Dec 5 to 8. On certain days, Mumbai’s pollution levels were worse than Delhi’s. The AQI in Mumbai on 9th December at 8.30 am was 309, compared with Delhi’s 249.

The rise in construction activities, vehicular pollution, and diminishing tree cover in and around the city are some important factors for the deteriorating Air quality in the city.

Organizations across the state have been demanding public health advisories on air quality for a long time. However, the state government and the BMC have again failed to alert Mumbaikars about the deteriorating air quality. December month saw hospitals in Mumbai report an increase in patients coming in with respiratory problems.

Growing air pollution is not just an environmental issue, it’s a health emergency for Mumbai.

What are we demanding?

Air Pollution can’t be labeled as just one city’s problem. Before breathing becomes a laborious task in Mumbai, the city needs a strong and comprehensive action plan. We are demanding the following:

  1. Install fuel desulfurization units (FDGs), which capture sulfur dioxide at thermal power stations in and around the city.

  2. Install adequate Air Quality Monitoring systems to keep an eye on local pollution sources.

  3. Plan and execute an awareness program on coping with air pollution for citizens. Also, issue health advisories in advance.

  4. Effectively implement the Climate action plan for Mumbai.

Sign the petition and join us in urging the state government and BMC to effectively implement these demands. We are looking to get 10,000 citizens to support these demands before we submit the petition to the authorities. Share it with your friends and family and help us get there.
