Banashankari citizen's horror over the waste processing unit
Located in Banashankari, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) wet waste processing unit has turned into a living and breathing horror for citizens. The choking and intolerable stench from the processing unit is seeping through the closed doors and windows of residents.
When the waste processing unit was reopened after six years in 2022, the citizens of Banashankari's 6th stage raised an alarm about the same. The waste plant not only emits a foul smell but the deafening sound of machinery in the middle of a residential locality is an added nuisance faced by residents.
The waste processing unit is surrounded by residential areas on three sides and a forest zone on one side. It impacts not only the residential complexes but also the health of schools and colleges in the vicinity. Plus, it endangers the urban wildlife as well. As per citizens, they are unable to even eat a meal because of the flies thronging in their homes.
The residents have been vocal about the issue and have done multiple protests to draw our civic body’s attention towards the same. On 14th Feb 2023, the residents from Banashankari did a dharna with citizens from all walks, yet there has been no action from our civic authorities still.
As of 13 April 2023, surviving with the processing unit in the locality has become unbearable for citizens who have raised concerns about their health and air pollution which is choking them in their own homes. The citizens and presidents of RWAs also met concerned MLAs and multiple stakeholders but there has only been silence.
The toxic odour will have a disastrous health impact on the citizens living in the area and Bengalureans in the longer run. Sign the petition and join us in urging BBMP for healthy solutions for waste processing units and ask the decision makers to take necessary action.
Demand: To shift the processing unit to a non-residential area or close the unit.
In Solidarity,
Citizens of Banashankari
