23-Year-Old Woman Techie Dies After Car Enters Flooded Bengaluru Underpass. Water seeps into residential houses at BTM Layout impacting the livelihood.

Update: 12 September 2022

As rainwater recedes from homes and streets, reptiles and soaring restoration bills await flood victims.

As Bangalore battles unprecedented downpours, the flooding crisis in major areas is disrupting lives and hampering livelihood. Poor infrastructure, rapid urbanisation, lack of an efficient drainage system and relentless encroachment have resulted in flooding of major parts of the city.

With waterlogged streets, commuters face extreme difficulty while the lives of citizens continue to remain at risk. The downpour caused severe waterlogging on Outer Ring Road and other parts of Bangalore, inundating basements of apartments and houses and causing residents to be rescued on rafts.

Residents of affected areas are forced to move out of their homes and move into hotels charging exorbitant tariffs. While Bangalore is renowned as India's IT City, major companies are now considering moving. The IT companies incurring an estimated loss of 225 Cr in just a few days.

Owing to poor planning, the pristine ecology of Bangalore is diminishing while the citizens face the wrath of it. With the city's water supply disrupted for two days, life came to a standstill in myriad ways. Hence, we ask BDA and BBMP to step up and take action in order to avoid a future man-made situation.

Why is this important?

From a 'City of Lakes,' Bangalore has transgressed into a Water hub. Albeit lacking the essential infrastructure to support the mounting population.

A 23-year-old woman was electrocuted on her way back from work during the deluge. Akhila, an administrative employee of a school, the sole breadwinner of her family, passed away owing to the Bengaluru floods.

We should *not* lose any more of our fellow citizens to civic problems.

Through the Bengaluru floods, Nature demands to be nurtured. To avoid a future environmental crisis, the collective voice needs to be heard.

Sign the petition and Urge

  • BDA to stop the encroachment of lakes and wetlands for residential and commercial projects. Halt development, instead focus on ecological improvement.

  • BBMP to fix potholes, repair roads and improve the failing infrastructure of Bangalore.

  • BBMP to impose fines on illegal construction waste dumping into water bodies.

  • BBMP to rework an effective sewage system for efficient waste management, and implement a sustainable solution for percolation.
