Demands:
Expedite Phase 3A Metro works for Sarjapur-Hebbal line on priority basis.
Restore Sulikunte Station in Metro DPR plan
Add a metro station at Junnasandra/Halanayakanahalli (old Wipro office).
Build good quality footpaths on the 18.5 km Sarjapur Road
Bring public transport NOW for last mile-connectivity to ORR Tech corridor and Hosur road Metro stations
Build intermediate entry & exit ramps on proposed double-decker road-cum-metro at Carmelaram & Dommasandra as they will distribute traffic evenly between high-speed lower deck road & grade-level Sarjapura Road
Bengaluru is grappling with severe traffic congestion, particularly in the areas surrounding Sarjapura. The rapid urbanization and increasing population have led to a significant rise in vehicular traffic, making daily commutes longer and more stressful.
Sarjapur Road has been one of the fastest developing areas, with high rises and office complexes dotting the road. The entire 18.5 kms of this road is now seeing dozens of large, new real estate projects; it is very likely that this contiguous stretch is already a high density corridor. We are growing 25% YoY and will be one of the highest density residential-commercial corridors of Bangalore in the next 5-7 years, comparable to the Bellandur-Marathahalli corridor of ORR. The 2024 Road infrastructure is taking 6 times the capacity and more than 1500 private vehicles are added to this region daily basis due to its IT population. In this context, please expedite the Phase 3A works on priority basis.
The Sulikunte area on/off Sarjapur Road is home to several educational institutions and new emerging developments, including Delhi Public School where over 10,000 students study. However, the current public transport options to and from the area are inadequate, leading to difficulties for students and employees in reaching their destinations on time. A metro station in this area would not only enhance accessibility but also ensure that students, office-goers, and residents can commute safely. The addition of a metro station at Sulikunte would also provide a reliable and efficient alternative to road travel, thereby reducing congestion on the roads and improving air quality in the area.
The Junnasandra & Halanayakanahalli area on Sarjapur road i.e. after Kaikondrahalli and before Doddakanneli has a) Wipro IT Park with another park about to start operations b) Multiple commercial complexes like Social housing large scale food joints, pubs and retail outlets c) Home to 5000+ IT Population. Hence, we would need to provide a station around Junnasandra/Halanayakanahalli just that will help with the last mile connection to all the commuters/residents of this area.
Sarjapur Road, a crucial arterial road in Bangalore, also lacks proper pedestrian infrastructure. We demand the construction of well-designed footpaths along the entire 18.5 km stretch to ensure safe and comfortable walking conditions for residents and commuters.
Before the Metro work starts, we need now high frequency buses plying at minimum 15 minutes frequency to ORR to reduce traffic congestion by private vehicles, also creating connections to upcoming Metro stations (Hosa road, E-City, Bommasandra) via arterial roads.
The Namma Metro that has already proven to be a transformative project for the city, should have stations at key population centers as part of Phase 3 development. Inclusion of the Sulikunte Metro Station on Sarjapur Road as part of Phase 3 is therefore essential, and would significantly enhance the network. This addition aligns with the city’s vision for sustainable development and improved urban mobility. To maximize the benefits of the restored Sulikunte Metro Station, we urge the BMRCL to provide efficient last-mile connectivity options to nearby tech corridors and residential areas. We propose the construction of an elevated road with ramps at strategic points to alleviate traffic congestion. This infrastructure will allow for smoother traffic flow and reduced travel times for commuters.
Not only does the metro route provide a more sustainable commute alternative, it is also a step towards building a safer community for women and gender-diverse commuters – who often struggle owing to lack of safe, clean, and well-lit footpaths, bus stops, rest rooms, skywalks, foot underpasses, and train stations.
We urge the BMRCL to consider the construction of the Sulikunte Metro Station as an essential component of the Phase 3 expansion. By doing so, BMRCL will not only alleviate traffic congestion but also provide much-needed connectivity for the local community, thereby contributing to the overall improvement of public transport in Bengaluru.
