The Mumbai local is called the city's lifeline. But not every part of the city can be reached by the train and a large number of Mumbaikars use BEST buses to travel within the city. After the lockdown, over 19 Lakh passengers are using BEST buses, and this number is expected to go up to 25 lakh now.[1]

Mumbai’s adoption of Electric Buses has been hailed for its quick execution under the FAME scheme. While Mumbai is already operating 72 electric buses in the city and is planning to take that number to 240 by 2022, the necessary charging infrastructure is still not in place.
Mumbai has only two charging stations for its entire fleet of electric buses.
Presently there are two bus charging points at Backbay and Dharavi depot. There are a total of 27 depots and not a single one in the suburbs is equipped with this facility. [2]
Just a handful of charging stations means shorter routes and very few areas covered, mostly in south Bombay, by these E-buses. Having a better infrastructure for e-buses in place will ensure faster replacement of polluting and underperforming diesel buses. It will also help reduce the number of breakdowns of old diesel engine buses.

Mumbai recently became part of C40 - global network of cities are taking bold climate action, leading the way towards a healthier and more sustainable future. To make sure Greater Mumbai becomes a leader and a model climate action in the world, there is an urgent need to introduce enough charging stations in all 27 depots under BEST.
