Start the construction of the Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) for Mula Mutha urgently!
The Mula Mutha river cleaning project in Pune has been pending for more than 50 years. Environment Minister Mr Prakash Javadekar has highlighted the urgency of this project in his press conferences. A loan of 990 crores was sanctioned and the project was kickstarted in January 2016. The most important components of the river cleaning project are 11 proposed Sewage Treatment Plants. Yet four years later, Pune Municipal Corporation hasn’t started the construction of a single STP.
A heavy amount of untreated sewage and excreta is mixed with river water every day. A Joint study by Indian and Australian researchers found that heavy microbial load on the river has created the bacteria in river water that are resistant to present antibiotics. This means the Mula Mutha River has become a serious health hazard for the city. The study emphasized the urgent need for STPs, while PMC has remained negligent.
