Dabbawalas have been an integral part of Mumbai's cultural fabric since 1890, catering to the nutritional needs of countless individuals across the city. In an increasingly polluted Mumbai gasping for clean air, we remain committed to doing our best for the environment by making emission- and pollution-free deliveries on foot, cycles, and local trains.
However, our efforts and efficiency are being hindered by a range of infrastructural challenges in our city, the biggest being the lack of cycling space along with very few secure parking spaces for our cycles at suburban railway stations. These are vital for our daily commute and livelihood, as our efficiency is affected by congested roads and theft or damage to our bicycles directly harms our means of livelihood.
We demand:
Dedicated cycling infrastructure throughout the city, including well-maintained cycling lanes and parking facilities at strategic locations
Collaboration with relevant authorities and stakeholders to create safe and secure parking spaces for cycles at suburban railway stations
Awareness campaigns and educational initiatives to encourage the use of cycles as an Eco-friendly mode of transport
It is critical that civic authorities address these challenges and not only help us sustain our livelihoods but also contribute to a more sustainable and livable Mumbai. By promoting cycling as a viable mode of transportation, we can reduce traffic congestion that plagues Mumbai, reduce carbon emissions, and ensure clean air for all while also promoting an affordable and efficient means of transport that leads to a healthier lifestyle. Together, we can create a city that prioritizes the well-being of its residents and fosters a cleaner environment.
