*Trigger warning: Contains references to rape and sexual violence”*
“Just hand the rapist a condom and cooperate with him while he fulfills his sexual desire"Date: 5 Dec 2019
- Filmmaker Daniel Shravan on Hyderabad rape case.
With this statement, the filmmaker has asked the government to legalise a“rape without violence” scheme.
I am furious! His statement asks women to accept rape as a norm and find ways to live with it when so many of us are trying hard for creating a safe environment for women.
By further adding “Rape is not a serious thing”, the filmmaker is normalising rape culture. He needs to apologise immediately for his obnoxious statement.
A few more measures in his “scheme” are:
“Girls above 18 should be educated on rape, i.e, taught not to refuse the sexual desires of men.”
“When men's sexual desires are fulfilled by rape, they will not kill the victim.”
His statements are directly related to the recent Hyderabad rape case. The police personnel should be investigated for overlooking the law and not reaching the crime scene despite attempts by the deceased’s sister to file a complaint.
Rape is a violation of consent. Asking women to cooperate when they are being raped is just plain insensitive and illogical.
We need to tell him that his irresponsible comment encourages perpetrators to commit sexual abuse crimes. Outrage on social media has forced him to take the post down.
But, we will take no less than an apology. We know public pressure is working on him, push him now to publicly apologise for his statement.
The #MeToo movement has seen women and allies fight victim-blaming and rape culture. We will not take such regressive statements lying down.
Now, we need to outrightly reject such offensive statements from people who don’t know the first thing about the trauma that is attached with rape. We can do this together.
