This is horrific! Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Internal Complaints Committee wants to rusticate a PhD student who accused a professor for sexual harassment.
Do you know what this means? One of the most prestigious universities of this country is outrightly asking students to keep mum about sexual harassment on campus.
“ICC has till date not done anything else other than sheer intimidation of the complainants. Our fight is to restore the body of Gender Sensitisation Committee against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH).”
- statement from Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union (JNUSU)
This is where you and I come into the picture -- we must stand in solidarity with the students who are risking their college seat, degree and career for a safer campus. Ask JNU’s ICC to take back this recommendation and set up an independent Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment.
Only a month ago two girls at Symbiosis Law School in Hyderabad were penalised for raising their voice against sexual harassment on campus, and now this. If we don’t object to this victim-shaming now, it will soon become the new normal across universities in India.
Time is running out -- JNU administration hasn’t allowed the student committee to meet any officials. They have submitted a letter seeking appointment but there has been no reply yet.
This is the perfect opportunity for us to pressurise the administration at JNU. Our support can help the students get talking with the authorities at JNU. Dialogue and negotiation is the first and crucial step in resolving this conflict. The students union wants to restore the Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH). Your signature can help them achieve that.
Let’s not waste this opportunity to demand safer college campuses.
