In an illegal reversal of rules, several undergraduate colleges in Bangalore have set higher cut-offs for female students, claiming they have ‘too many girls’.

This is entirely illogical and discriminatory -- higher cut-offs for girls will deter them from applying and securing seats in colleges.

Colleges like Christ University in Bangalore have reversed the rules of the Department of Pre-University Education (Dept. of PUE) of Karnataka to keep out girls, and allow more boys to get in. Why? Because ‘girls are outperforming boys’.

Imagine your 17 year old daughter, who studied earnestly in school to score a good percentage, now being denied entrance into the college of her dreams -- simply because boys are not securing high enough scores to clear the cut-offs. It’s unfair to penalise girls for performing well.

It has taken us years of hard work, breaking stereotypes of women’s roles, and fighting for equal educational opportunities to get to this point today where our daughters are shining -- this kind of discrimination is certainly not what our girls deserve.

The rules of the Dept. of PUE safeguard equal number of seats for boys and girls in order to provide opportunities for girls who have been traditionally held back from attending school.

If enough of us call out the misuse of these rules by colleges like Christ University, we can pressure the Dept. of PUE to intervene and ensure girls get the seats they deserve for their hard work.
