** Trigger Warning: This email contains references to sexual violence that may be disturbing. **
Indian national newspaper The Hindu has once again published a sexist matrimonial advertisement -- but this time it has resulted in threats of rape and extreme sexual violence.
Let’s strike when the iron is hot. The Hindu must issue a no-sexist-ad policy immediately.
The matrimonial ad from a Mysore-based industrialist asked for a non-feminist bride, to which a young woman sent a satirical email in response. The reply she received from the industrialist is not only shocking, but bone-chilling in its threats of torture, rape and sexual abuse. The actual response itself was too violent for me to add in this email.
A respectable newspaper like The Hindu needs to have a far better selection process for their advertisements. Threats of violent sexual abuse are not to be taken lightly.
It's now or never for The Hindu to prove to their readers that they are committed to their values of progressive journalism and will put in place a no-sexist-ad policy.
Let’s rally together to ensure that The Hindu hears loud and clear that we, their readership, will not tolerate sexism in our newspaper.
