UPDATE: 15 Feb 2019

Students at Jamia Milia Islamia were successful in achieving their demands after a meeting with the Vice Chancellor.

"Mr. Ahmad [the accused] will abstain from participating in any activity of the department till the enquiry by the Internal Complaints Committee and the Fact Finding Committee is completed. The inclusion of external members in the Fact Finding Committee has also been agreed in principle", said a University press statement.

UPDATE: 11 Feb 2019

This is a huge MILESTONE! We’ve just heard news that Jamia Millia Islamia has formed a Fact Finding Committee to look into the complaints of sexual harassment and unwelcome advances. They have also set up an Internal Complaints Committee which has begun its investigation into the matter.

Prof. Ahmed, Head of the Department of Applied Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts (JMI) has been accused of sexual and mental harassment, unsolicited advances and lewd texting towards female students. After students organised peaceful protests against him on campus, Prof. Ahmed has been “sent on a temporary leave”.

Collective efforts from the students and media pressure has once again proved to be an effective measure for authorities to sit up and take sexual harassment allegations seriously.

Let’s not stop here --  students, who were also assaulted during the protest, stand undeterred with their demand of termination of Prof. Ahmed. We must ensure that the ICC completes in investigations and the Jamia authorities implement its recommendations.

Here are the fresh demands of the students:

1. Formal suspension of Prof. Hafeez Ahmed until the inquiry is complete.

2. At least five students to be a part of the inquiry committee in the case.

3. No protesting student should be detained and no legal action shall be taken against them in this regard.

4. It should be ensured that the students are safe and no harm is done to them.

5. No outsider should enter the premises and threaten them.

6. Mention that a permanent faculty will be appointed as soon as possible.

The students of Jamia were violently attacked because they asked for a safe campus. It was only after the attack that the Jamia administration responded to grievances of the students. Let’s not wait until students have to be undergo another attack for their voices to be heard.

The brave students are still running mass protests on the campus. Lets send them our support and solidarity by signing and sharing this petition.

India’s #MeToo wave might have slowed down on social media but fortunately, it has encouraged more voices against sexual harassment.

One such ripple effect is seen at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), Delhi where students are protesting for the dismissal of Prof Ahmad who has been accused of passing inappropriate comments, intimidation and moral policing. Your support for the students at Jamia Millia Islamia is just a click-away.

“Aap zarur raat me teen baje tak jaagte honge. Bataiye kisse baat karti hain, aap apney aap se pyaar karti hain ya kisi aur se, aap kisi ek se pyaar karti hain kisi chaar se karti hain?”

(You must be awake until 3 am in the morning. Who do you talk to? Do you love yourself or someone else? Do you love one person or multiple?)

This cringe-worthy interrogation took place when a student didn’t finish her homework owing to cervical pain. This is outrageous.

It is motivating to know that students have collectively raised their voices against the harassment. Let’s support them and ask the Dean of the Students’ Welfare Committee Prof Naved Iqbal to suspend Hafeez Ahmad until due process is followed.

The thriving abuse culture at colleges around the country confirms the discomfort students go through when harassment is not called out.  It is high time we combat this with an increasing number of Internal Complaints Committees (ICCs) at institutes in India.

Sign this petition now so we can win this fight and make it clear that students’ voices matter and that accusations about harassment will be heard and acted upon.
