UPDATE:

To,

Mr. Harsh Vardhan, Minister of Science and Technology

Mr. Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank', Education Minister

Dr. Suman Sharma, Principal of Lady Shri Ram College

TW: Suicide

The death by suicide of the 19-year-old scholarship student from Lady Shri Ram (LSR) College has brought into light the incompetency of the scholarship grants in our education system

The non-disbursal of government aid, refusal for her hostel accommodation request, the national pandemic, and the digital divide in our learning platforms has led to the death by suicide of a promising student at LSR College.

Will you stand together against this systematic and institutional apathy towards the students of this country?

This case has brought to the surface the emotional duress faced by students, particularly by those from economically and socially vulnerable backgrounds.

The student community is coming together asking the government to take action to fill these gaps so that our students can concentrate on their studies in a healthier and more secure environment.

Will you stand by our students to take these demands to the Ministry of Science and Technology:

  1. Release the pending scholarships.

  2. The amount of her scholarship be disbursed to her family immediately.

  3. Free hostel accommodations for vulnerable students be made available

  4. Greater attention be dedicated to solving the digital divide, including access to technology and internet, and ability to attend online classes.

The digital divide refers to the gap between those who have access to the internet and technology such as mobiles, tablets, and laptops and those without such access; the pandemic has further exacerbated this gap by virtue of heightened economic difficulties and complete reliance on online classes.

The students are the future of this country and our efforts can make them sail through this challenging pandemic time. Let’s do our bit for the students.
