“The workers are very excited and those who are bachelors, they can get married there… And the Muslim workers should celebrate here. Get married there. To a fair Kashmiri girl.”
It’s barely been three full days since Article 370 was unconstitutionally scrapped in Jammu and Kashmir, and BJP MLA Vikram Saini from Muzaffarnagar, UP thinks this is a cause for celebration for unmarried party workers to find Kashmiri brides.
His statement is insensitive, misogynistic and outright sexist. The fact that it comes at a critically sensitive time in the country shows where his empathy and leadership skills lie. We must not let him get away with making problematic statements like these. He must apologise immediately.
There is a total information blackout in Kashmir at the moment, with families struggling to connect with each other and ensure safety. A military curfew has been imposed making it impossible for residents to access medical services and basic ration.
In this grave context, it is unacceptable for a government official to trivialise the situation and divert attention by making such sexist public statements.
As citizens, if we don’t pull him up for such outrageous public behaviour, it’ll give an impetus to others who don’t respect women. We cannot afford to stay quiet and allow these statements to become the norm.
Don’t waste this opportunity to demand better from our elected representatives.
