To,
M S Suresh Kumar, Primary & Secondary Education Minister
Midday meals are essential for the nutrition of children from low-income families.
56 lakh children are fed each day in government and aided schools under the midday meal scheme (MDM). In Karnataka, 8+ lakh students receive mid-day meals. For poor families, the MDM Scheme eases the children's burden on the nutrition front.
With schools closed during the lockdown that started in March, the meals were stopped. In compensation for the hot meals, the government distributed dry ration kits at the rate of 3Kg of rice and 1Kg of dal per kid to families of school children in April and May.
But this was again stopped in June citing reasons that there was no need for these additional food grains as families had already been covered under the public distribution system.
For children from low-income families, hot milk and meals under the school feeding program had been the only source of nutritious food. The midday meal scheme has played a big role in addressing hunger and boosting attendance in schools.(1)
The children have been denied nutritious food for seven months and with uncertainty over when the classes will resume is a potential risk for these children.
Demand Mr S Suresh Kumar, Primary & Secondary Education Minister, to provide ration kits to families of school children.
The ration kit should contain
Rice 3kg
Dal 1Kg
Cooking oil
Milk powder and
Eggs (optional)
