More Bus priority lanes for Bengaluru.

More Bus priority lanes for Bengaluru.

Start the work on more bus priority lanes in Bengaluru

Why is this important?

What’s a bus priority lane?

It’s a lane or multiple lanes dedicated to buses aimed at reducing congestion and increasing speed of buses. They may be long, continuous networks, or short segments used to allow buses to bypass bottlenecks .

In November 2019, BMTC conducted the first pilot for bus priority lanes around Outer Ring Road in Bengaluru. It’s a project supported by the BBMP, Bengaluru Traffic police, BESCOM and DULT.

The idea behind bus lanes is to ensure priority access over private transport, especially two-wheelers, and in the process motivate people to ditch their own vehicles. This, in turn, is expected to reduce overall congestion, which is extremely needed in a city like Bengaluru.

In February 2020, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) began installing physical barriers like plastic bollards and sand-filled crash barriers to tackle the issue of non-compliance of lane discipline. These are definitely positive moves by government agencies towards giving public mobility the boost that it needs.

However, a year after the success of the Bus Priority Lanes pilot, we are yet to see work on the remaining 11 stretches. Of the proposed 11 corridors, 7 do not even require any kind of road widening.

As the economy limps back to normalcy and lower traffic volume now, it’s perfect timing for the BMTC to restart work again on the remaining Bus priority lanes.

Sign this petition to hold them accountable to their promise. Bengaluru needs a robust bus transport system.
