Decision makers:
1. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani
2. Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis
3. Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA)
Demands:
Scrap/ halt the ‘Mumbai eye’ project immediately
Conduct Public consultation before making a decision
Prioritise funding for urgent civic and environmental needs such as -
- Allocating budget towards getting cleaner air
- Utilising parts of the budget to fix the potholes
- Using the money to improve public transportation
- Enhancing last mile connectivity
As Mumbai chokes on toxic air, quite literally, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed a massive Ferris Wheel, the ‘Mumbai Eye’ modelled on the iconic London Eye. Despite public outcry on budget priorities, this project, which is likely to take up 2-3 acres of land, is being pushed without public consultation and raises serious concerns about its environmental impact.
Mumbai is facing pressing issues like air pollution, floods, traffic congestion and inadequate public infrastructure. The streets are often dug up repeatedly, dust and construction debris is on the rise, exacerbating toxins in the air. Roads are clogged with vehicles, in the face of a broken public transport system. Come monsoon, the city gets inundated with water. And yet, these issues remain unaddressed!
On February 4, 2025, the BMC presented a INR 74000+ crore budget for the financial year 2025-26, which is purportedly its biggest budget till date. Instead of addressing these concerns, crores of funds may be diverted towards vanity projects like the giant ferris wheel that only serve as a tourist attraction, for a handful of the city’s population.
As of now, the BMC has provided no transparency about the feasibility of the project, the land required for the construction of the Ferris Wheel or the exact funds needed.
At this juncture, what Mumbai needs is better public transport infrastructure, clean air and flood prevention! Not an opulent ferris wheel that stands to benefit a small section of the population.
Join as, as we demand responsible urban planning and compel the BMC to scrap the ‘Mumbai Eye’ project!
