नुकत्याच आलेल्या तौक्ते चक्रीवादळाने मुंबई शहरात आणि कोकण किनारपट्टीवर मोठे नुकसान केले. यात हजारो झाडे पडली आणि त्यामुळे अनेक ठिकाणी मालमत्तेचे नुकसान झाले. काही ठिकाणी झाडे पडून मृत्यूही झालेत. त्यानंतर आलेल्या मॉन्सूनपूर्व पावसानेही अनेक शहरात मोठ्या प्रमाणात झाडे पडली. यातूनही मोठी हानी झाली.

झाडे पडण्याच्या या या सर्व घटनांमध्ये एक गोष्ट प्रकर्षाने दिसून आली. जी झाडे पडली त्यातील ७० टक्केहून अधिक झाडे ही विदेशी मुळाची होती. यात प्रामुख्याने गुलमोहर, रेन ट्री आणि रॉयल पाल्म हि झाडे आहेत. त्याआधीही आलेल्या चक्रीवादळांमध्येही विदेशी मुळाचीच झाडे पडली किंवा उखडली गेली आहेत.

गेली अनेक वर्षे महाराष्ट्रातील पर्यावरणवादी संस्था - संघटना, वृक्ष संवर्धन करणाऱ्या संस्था याबाबतच्या धोक्यांबद्दल सांगत आहेत. विदेशी मुळाच्या झाडांमुळे स्थानिक जैविविधतेलाही मोठ्या प्रमाणात धोका आहे. स्थानिक पक्षी विदेशी मुळाच्या झाडांवर घरटी करत नाहीत, फुलपाखरे व इतरही कीटक, झाडांवर राहणारे प्राणी विदेशी झाडांवर आपला अधिवास करत नाहीत. महाराष्ट्रातील अनेक महानगरपालिकांकडून शहरात लावल्या जाणाऱ्या किंवा टेकड्यांवर लावल्या गेलेल्या वृक्षांमध्ये मोठ्या प्रमाणात विदेशी मुळाची झाडे आहेत. यामुळे या परिसंस्थामधील पक्ष्यांचे, प्राण्यांचे अधिवास धोक्यात येत आहेत. शहरात पक्ष्यांची, फुलपाखरांची संख्याही घटत आहे. स्थानिक परिसंस्थामधील जैवविविधतेला आणि त्यातील अन्न साखळ्यांना यातून मोठ्या प्रकारचे नुकसान होते.

या सर्व बाबी लक्षात घेता आम्ही मुख्यमंत्री उद्धव ठाकरे यांना खालील मागण्या करत आहोत.

१. महाराष्ट्रातील सर्व सरकारी व निमसरकारी,शालेय व महाविद्यालयीन तसेच कॉर्पोरेट सोशल रिस्पॉन्सिबिलिटी मधून होणाऱ्या वृक्षारोपणांमध्ये फक्त देशी झाडे लावली जावीत.
२. शहरांमधील विदेशी मुळाची झाडे टप्प्याटप्प्याने कमी करून त्याठिकाणी देशी मुळाची झाडे लावावीत.


Cyclone Tauktae uprooted thousands of trees in the Konkan region and in Mumbai city and most of the Konkan region. There were also many cases of falling branches causing damage to property. Even loss of life in some cases. Other districts in Maharashtra like Pune, Thane, Nashik, Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri have seen similar accidents in the last few years. 

Most of the trees that were uprooted in such incidents were non-native trees like Gulmohar, Rain Tree and Royal Palm trees.

Environmentalists have been warning about this for many years in Maharashtra. The roots of exotic trees cannot penetrate deep inside the earth. This results in uprooting during such extreme weather events. Apart from uprooting, Non-native trees also harm the local ecology in many ways: 

• Many non-native trees are invasive in nature. Invasive species can sweep away local biodiversity.[1]

• Birds do not nest on most of the non-native trees. So when a larger portion of the cities is occupied by non-native trees, the bird habitat is reduced.[2][3]

• Non-native trees also harm the butterfly population in the cities.[2][3]

Cyclone Tauktae became the strongest tropical storm to skirt across Mumbai in at least five decades.[4] Recent studies have shown that the decadal increase in cyclone events had increased six times from two cyclones in 1970-1979 to 12 during 2010-19 that had an impact along the Maharashtra coast.[5] This has also increased the threat of uprooting the tree and falling of branches many folds.

Therefore to reduce the number of accidents, deaths as well as loss of property due to falling trees and to flourish the local ecology, we urge the Maharashtra government to put in place::

1. State-level policy to enforce that all government departments must use only native trees for their tree-planting drives.

2. Gradual phasing out of exotic trees in cities and replacing them with native trees.
