Send your objections: Save the fate of more than 50 heritage trees!

Over the past few years Bengaluru has been plagued by poorly planned infrastructure projects leading to severe traffic bottlenecks. And for some reason, there seems to be an assumption that flyovers are the solution. This could not be farther from the truth.

There is a proposal for the widening of Sankey Road from Bhashyam Circle to Malleshwaram 18th cross and the construction of a flyover along the Sankey Road in Malleshwaram constituency in an attempt to reduce traffic congestion in the area. Over 50 heritage trees will be cut for this project.

This proposed development will only cause further traffic bottlenecks, reduce walkability, and add more fuel to the issue of traffic congestion in Bengaluru. There has been no public consultation and project details have not been shared with the public either.

The flyover plan is yet another example of ad hoc planning, and directly contravenes the provisions of the Comprehensive Bangalore Mobility Plan, which was issued by the Government of Karnataka in 2020.

Along with the felling of trees, this project will also involve the removal of footpaths regularly used by residents including school children.

This flyover plan is not well thought out, is poorly planned, and will not result in an easing of traffic congestion or removal of the severe traffic bottlenecks that currently exist. Cars will enter the flyover quickly, only to encounter severe bottlenecks at the next intersection. The flyover will not solve the problem of traffic congestion.

Bangalore requires holistic, easy to implement, economically sound solutions like synchronising traffic traffic signals based on data and improvement of public transportation under the BMLTA.
