Ask: Three proposed streets to be developed as cycling and pedestrian-friendly

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) recently issued an advisory to Municipal Corporations to identify three market streets that can be made pedestrian and cycle-friendly to comply with lockdown protocols and physical distancing. After considering suggestions from Bengaluru experts like ESAF -- a pan India NGO working in 9 cities to promote Livable City Program -- and based on the criteria from MoHUA, it’s proposed that the following streets should be made pedestrian and cycling friendly.

1. Commercial Street

2. Gandhi Bazaar

3. 8th Cross, Malleswaram

We believe MoHUA's initiative is a great opportunity to make the streets of Bengaluru vehicle free and cycle/pedestrian-friendly. It'll be a good starting point to scale this to all the neighbourhoods in the city. This exercise also gives stakeholders a chance to explore what or how pedestrian and cycling-friendly streets look like. It will also assist in the livelihoods of street vendors, and bring them on board the project. We hope that these pilot projects pave the way for many more similar projects across the city.

Send a message to BBMP, DULT and Karnataka Urban Housing Department to consider these proposed streets to be developed as cycling and pedestrian-friendly.
