As cities expand, it becomes crucial to maintain the delicate balance between humans and wildlife. Very often trees are cut and forests encroached to cater to the growing infrastructure needs.. This has adverse consequences on the ecological balance and hinders the free movement of wildlife.

Over the past 50 years, 93 percent of Bengaluru has lost its lake and forest cover to concrete and construction, as per an IISC study [1].

Yet Bengaluru is home to a rich array of biodiversity. From unique species of birds to butterflies and bees, numerous flora and fauna call the city their home. But rapid urbanization is threatening the very existence of these species. We share our spaces with different species, be it birds, bees or snakes and we must do all it takes to protect them and in turn coexist with them

This National Wildlife Week 2024,  as part of the celebration of India’s rich biodiversity, we are calling all Bengaloreans to take a pledge to make Namma Bengaluru a better place for wildlife! While rural communities across Karnataka have co-existed with wildlife such as elephants seamlessly, it is an equal responsibility of ours as citizens of Bengaluru to ensure that we act locally to sustain the wildlife that surrounds us and take measures to ensure it thrives!

We want you to pledge to:

  1. Protecting and restoring Bangalore’s lakes, wetlands, parks, and green spaces. These are vital habitats for snakes, birds, fish, and countless other species.

  2. Creating habitats for urban wildlife bytransforming my immediate surroundings—my balcony, garden, or neighborhood—into mini sanctuaries for local wildlife.

  3. Consciously reducing plastic use, choose eco-friendly products, and minimise harmful waste to protect our lakes, rivers, and green spaces.

  4. Make Bengaluru a city where humans and wildlife coexist.  I pledge to do my part in making Bangalore a city where nature and people thrive together.

This National Wildlife Week, we urge you to take the pledge for coexistence! Protecting our wildlife is the bedrock of a healthy and balanced ecosystem. No matter the size, every species plays a vital role in maintaining the balance of the complex web of life and it is our duty to ensure we sustain, not destroy, that balance!
