Update: December 2022

The Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) Project, which has been under scrutiny for over 15 years for the damage it can cause to the environment, is back in the news. The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has floated fresh tenders this year for the construction of the road even before getting an Environmental Clearance. As per Indian Express, 33000 trees are at risk of being axed! The project is supposed to affect forest land in Jarakabande Kaval and six water bodies too.

Additionally, the project plan has undergone many changes and there is uncertainty over the extent of the damage it will cause as a detailed project report and fresh environmental impact assessment (EIA) has not been published and conducted respectively.

Why is this important?

33,838 trees, 25 acres of forest land and 6 water bodies are under threat due to the Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) project in Bengaluru.

Previously

July 25 2020

The Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) had been arguing that only 200 will be cut, using an erroneous Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had rejected the report based on the submission by the Horticulture and Forest Department that about 16,685 trees need to be felled.

Namma Bengaluru’s biodiversity and ecology are at risk! Birds, animals, trees, waterbodies and the livelihood of farmers are threatened because of the mismanagement of the Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) Project.

We’re asking the authorities to:

  • Publish the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for everyone to give their comments.

  • Conduct a fresh Environmental Impact Assessment
