To Sandeep Vanga Reddy
Director
Kabir Singh
Update: 10 JULY 2019
“I was trying to explain my protagonist’s mindset. Violence may be his way of expressing love. It’s not mine.”
Director Sandeep Vanga responded to pressure on Twitter yesterday. He said that his interview was incorrectly edited and he wasn’t endorsing violence.
The good news is that he is feeling the pressure! However, we still need an apology from him for the irresponsible statement.

“If you can't slap, if you can't touch your woman wherever you want, you can't kiss, you can't use cuss words, I don't see emotion there”
- Sandeep Vanga Reddy, director, ‘Kabir Singh’
This statement makes one cringe. According to Sandeep Vanga Reddy, director of recent Bollywood movie Kabir Singh (Hindi version of Telugu original Arjun Reddy), a couple isn’t close enough, if they can’t slap each other!
Not only is it irresponsible and misogynistic to promote such toxic behaviours, Vanga’s statement makes a mockery of the Domestic Violence Act (2005) which is meant to safeguard against acts of domestic violence in relationships.
That’s exactly why you should ask Sandeep Vanga Reddy to retract his misogynistic statement.
He has equated “honesty”, “physical demonstration of love” and “liberty” with being able to “slap each other.” It sends the message to young couples that it is okay to physically abuse each other as an expression of their love. This is totally unacceptable!
What happened to healthy relationships where two people try to help each other become a better person? Let’s tell Vanga that we aren’t okay with going back to regressive, toxic relationship theories.
Many celebrities like Samantha Akkineni, Chinmayi and Jwala Gutta have raised their voices against the statement. Kubbra Sait’s spoof video onVanga’s statement has also gone viral.
Don’t waste this window of opportunity to call out misogyny!
