To,
Om Prakash Singh - Director General of Police, U.P.
Justice H.L. Dattu - Chairperson, National Commission for Human Rights
Trigger Warning: refers to assault
She was beaten, she is bleeding and suffering alone in jail. Will you help?
Social activist and actress Sadaf Jafar was picked up by the Lucknow Police during her Facebook Live documenting the police’s inaction in allowing miscreants to turn violent at last Thursday’s protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act.
Ms. Jafar was arbitrarily picked up by the Lucknow Police, and has since been manhandled and beaten by cops. Instead of picking up those individuals who were visibly throwing stones, the Police targeted Ms. Jafar.
Such kind of police brutality meted out to individual protesters is in violation of article 19(1) of the Indian Constitution that allows every citizen the right to peaceful protest.
While it is true that Section 144 was imposed in Lucknow that day, Thursday 19 December, Sadaf Jafar was there on her own. Section 144 bans the assembly of 5 or more persons. The UP Police must make public on what grounds was an individual picked up in this manner, and beaten so bad that she began bleeding.
If we don’t call out this kind of police brutality, we will weaken an already battered system of rule of law. The Constitution allows every citizen to peacefully put forth their views in support of or against government decisions.
While Ms. Jafar is in jail, you and I still have the freedom to speak up for what is constitutionally right.
