Shri Piyush Goyal
Minister of Railways
A woman passenger had to tweet to the Indian Railways to ask for a sanitary pad during her travels. What’s more -- she got trolled and shamed for demanding what is such a basic requirement.
The irony is that Minister for Railways Piyush Goyal had promised installing sanitary napkin vending machines in over 60 trains -- way back in 2018! It’s high time Indian Railways fulfilled its promise.
The good news is that we know that women’s safety is being prioritised by the Indian Railways. Last year, Minister Goyal was in talks with Dastak, producers of eco-friendly sanitary pads, as part of his plan to provide easy access to cheap sanitary napkins on trains and stations. Further, just yesterday the Railways rolled out pink coaches for women passengers on certain trains in the Northeast Frontier Railway Zone.
This is the perfect time for us to remind Minister Goyal to set a deadline for installing sanitary pad vending machines. No woman should have to resort to social media to access such a basic necessity.
The Indian Railways are known to respond to passenger queries, especially on Twitter. They even sent sanitary pads and painkillers to a woman in the middle of her journey.
If enough of us raise our concerns, we can convince them to fast-track their plans to make menstrual products accessible to all women passengers.
