Decision maker:
Tree Authority Byculla, BMC
Central Railway
Demands:
Pause the felling of the 78 trees until a transparent public consultation process is conducted
Ensure notices for tree-cutting are displayed prominently, keeping legal requirements in mind
Look for alternatives to construction of 5th and 6th line, so ecological damage is minimised
While residents in Mumbai are choking on bad air, quite literally, the Central Railway has put notices on 78 trees on the east side of the Parel Railway station, marking them to be chopped in the days to come!
These notices have been strategically placed behind the trees. Passersby cannot see these notices easily, until they go around the trees to check. The notices are dated December 4, however, they have been signed by the designated BMC tree authority in Byculla only on December 20, 2024.
The trees will allegedly be felled to make way for the 5th and 6th line of CSMT and Kurla stations on the Central Railway, on the plot of land acquired by CR from the Tata Mill Compound. Out of the 78 trees to be chopped, only 2 will be transplanted.
The trees are over at least 45 years old, stated locals in the area. This deceitful tactic denies Mumbai’s citizens their right to raise objections within the legally mandated 30-day period.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Central Railway are going ahead without transparency, which could prove to be disastrous not just for Mumbai’s environment but the health of its residents. Chopping age-old trees will exacerbate Mumbai’s air pollution crisis!
We are urging the BMC tree authority as well as the Central Railway to pause the felling of the 78 trees until a transparent public consultation process is conducted, as legally mandated, and ensure notices for tree-cutting are displayed prominently. The 78 trees must be saved and alternatives for construction must be considered.
