Demands:

  1. Scrap the plan to construct a swimming pool on A K Vaidya Ground.

  2. Re-evaluate the need for a swimming pool and consider alternative locations

Introduction:

A beloved community space in Bandra is under threat. The BMC has proposed to remove 41 trees to build a 23-crore swimming pool on A K Vaidya Ground. Not only does this reduce the already limited green cover of the city, but it is also taking away half of the community's only large playground. The issue is not just about the loss of trees, it's about the loss of a community space where children play and residents of all ages are able to find some peace in nature.

Why it Matters:

The A K Vaidya Ground has been one of the last remaining open public spaces in a fast developing neighbourhood like Bandra West. It’s where children are able to run and play, where senior citizens can walk and breathe in fresh air, and where anyone can come to take a pause from the hectic world.

The proposed project would take away half of this space - and with it also take away the simple joys of childhood and the sense of community that only a shared, open space can bring.

27 trees have been marked for the axe while the remaining 14 have been identified for transplantation. Chopping or transplanting mature trees has a negative environmental impact and disturbs the ecological balance of any space. The long term damage that will be caused by cutting down these trees can’t be justified by a swimming pool

While a public swimming pool may have its own benefits, alternative locations can be considered instead of causing damage to this space. The residents need more green spaces and playgrounds rather than more concrete structures.

Therefore, we urge the decision makers to put the interests of Bandra residents and the environment first by stopping the construction of the swimming pool on A K Vaidya Ground. We request them to find alternative locations and preserve the playground.
