UPDATE - 5th September

The central government’s green panel has rejected any plan of expansion. It’s a victory for all of us and wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our members.

UPDATE - 16th August 2022

We attended the public hearing and submitted the petition signed by our members to the authorities. We also met several residents of the Sukhdev Vihar area who were protesting against the expansion and stood in solidarity with them.

The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi has proposed the expansion of the Okhla Waste To Energy (WTE) plant from 25MW to 40MW of power. This plant, functioning since 2011 has remained controversial and under litigation from the beginning.

Currently, the plant is already generating 23 MW of energy emitting poisonous gasses, toxins, and ash into the already polluted Delhi air. According to reports, 40% of the waste being incinerated at this plant ends up as toxic ash which is again dumped into the Delhi landfills, eventually reaching our soil and water bodies.

Locals around the waste to energy plant have been complaining for a long time that burning ash falls onto the rooftops and terraces of DDA and other apartments nearby. Within a 2 km radius, there are 4 major hospitals: Fortis Escorts, Holy Family, Apollo, and Bansal. The first two have officially asked for relocation of the plant since the emissions harm patients.

The distance prescribed by the Ministry of Urban Development's manual on waste management is 500 meters from residential areas -- but this plant is at 50 meters!

We are supporting the residents who have been bearing the brunt of this mess for a long time and are now resisting the expansion further.

Sign the petition and join us in supporting them. Our team will deliver a physical copy of the petition to the relevant authorities on the day of the public hearing - 16th August 2022. We just have 5 days and we need at least 5000 signatures. Help us get there!
