Make Karnataka walking and cycling-friendly

Decision maker: Legislative Assembly of Karnataka

Demands: Pass the Active Mobility Bill in the assembly’s winter session.

Imagine a city where you can walk or cycle without worrying about your safety. A city that is not polluted, the streets are bustling with people, and the sound of laughter and conversation fills the air. This vision is not just a dream – it's a reality that we can achieve with better infrastructure for pedestrians and human-powered vehicles.

Think about how much more enjoyable your daily commute would be if you could walk or cycle along well-maintained paths, free from the chaos of traffic. Imagine the joy of walking around  the neighbourhood or seeing your children walk or cycle safely on the streets, and go to school without the fear of speeding vehicles. Added to that the satisfaction of knowing that you're doing your part to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change?

We don't have to look far to see examples of what Karnataka can be. In Bengaluru, for instance, take a stroll down 100ft Road, Indiranagar and marvel at the wide, well-maintained footpaths that make walking a pleasure. Or hop on your bicycle and explore Raj Bhavan Road, where the dedicated cycling tracks ensure your safety and encourage a more liveable city.

As residents of Karnataka, we have the power to shape the future of our state. By advocating for the passage of the Active Mobility Bill – which proposes investing in pedestrian and cycling infrastructure – we can create a sustainable urban environment that prioritizes the health and well-being of our community.

What is the Active Mobility Bill?

The Active Mobility Bill has been drafted to protect the rights of pedestrians and cyclists in urban areas of Karnataka. The Bill also mandates Urban Local Bodies (Example: BBMP, town municipal councils etc.) to design accessible infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists in urban spaces while ensuring their safety.

The Bill was put up for consultation in January 2022, and comments were sent by many. The Bill has been revised based on the citizen feedback and submitted for approval to the Government.

Why do we need the Active Mobility Bill?

One of the most significant benefits of investing in this infrastructure is the reduced reliance on cars. With safe, accessible paths for walking and cycling, more people will choose these eco-friendly modes of commute over driving. This shift will help alleviate traffic congestion, making our roads less crowded and our commutes more pleasant. Picture a state where gridlock is a thing of the past and where the streets are designed for people, not just vehicles.

Let's advocate for the passage of the Active Mobility Bill in the winter session of the State Legislature which will tentatively be held in December and demand that our leaders invest in the policies and infrastructure that will transform Karnataka into the sustainable state that we can all be proud of living in.
